FAQ
General
What is Takonaut?
Takonaut is a project management platform built for modern teams. It combines traditional PM features (tasks, sprints, boards, epics) with AI-powered assistance, gamification, and agile ceremony support in a single tool.
Is Takonaut open source?
No. Takonaut is a closed-source SaaS product.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. Takonaut offers a free tier along with paid plans. You can get started without a credit card and upgrade as your team grows.
Is there a mobile app?
Takonaut is currently a web application that works in any modern browser. Desktop and mobile apps are planned for the future.
Can I self-host Takonaut?
Takonaut is primarily a cloud SaaS product. Self-hosted deployment is available for enterprise customers.
AI Features
What AI models does Takonaut use?
Takonaut supports multiple AI providers. You can use the built-in credits or bring your own API key (BYOK) from supported providers.
How do AI credits work?
Every AI interaction (chat, executive analysis, standup synthesis, auto-scheduling) consumes credits from your wallet. You receive a monthly allocation that refreshes each billing cycle, and you can purchase additional permanent credits anytime. See AI Credits & BYOK for details.
Can I use my own API key instead of credits?
Yes. The BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) feature lets you configure your own API key so that AI requests are billed directly to your provider account instead of consuming Takonaut credits.
Integrations
What integrations are available?
Currently Takonaut integrates with GitHub and Slack, with more integrations planned for the future. There is also a generic webhook system for custom integrations.
How does the GitHub integration work?
You can link GitHub repositories to projects, and Takonaut will track pull requests and commits against tasks. Branch names that include the task ID are auto-linked. See Integrations for setup details.
Can I connect Takonaut to AI tools like Claude or Cursor?
Yes. Takonaut ships with an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. Generate an API key in Settings > API Keys, then add the MCP server URL to your AI tool’s configuration. This lets Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible tool read and write tasks, sprints, standups, and more directly.
Data & Security
Can I export my data?
Yes. Takonaut supports full data export so you can download your projects, tasks, and other organization data at any time.
Is my data isolated from other organizations?
Yes. Takonaut is a multi-tenant platform with complete data isolation between organizations. Every API request is scoped to the active organization, and there is no cross-org data leakage.
Can one user belong to multiple organizations?
Yes. A single account can be a member of multiple organizations. Use the organization switcher in the sidebar to switch between them. Each org has its own projects, teams, settings, and data.
Features
What agile methodologies does Takonaut support?
Takonaut is built around Scrum workflows with sprints, backlogs, story points, and planning poker. It also supports Kanban-style boards with customizable columns and tracks. Teams can use whichever approach fits their workflow.
How does the gamification system work?
Team members earn XP and coins by completing tasks, submitting standups, and participating in ceremonies. XP drives a leaderboard ranking, while coins can be spent in the shop on rewards. Managers can set bounties on tasks and send appreciation to further motivate the team. See Gamification for the full breakdown.
Can I customize the board columns?
Yes. Each project has its own board configuration. You can rename the default columns (To Do, In Progress, Done) or add custom ones. You can also create sub-tracks within a column for more granular workflow stages. See Project Settings.
What is the quest system?
Quests are structured challenges with XP and coin rewards. They come in four scopes — World (org-wide), Guild (team), Side, and Personal. Some quests are auto-generated by the system while others can be created by managers. See Quests for details.
How do roles and permissions work?
Takonaut uses a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system with built-in roles like Owner, Admin, Department Head, Project Manager, Team Lead, Member, and more. Permissions can be scoped to the organization, department, team, or project level. See Roles & Permissions.
What is the Performance Reviews feature?
Performance Reviews lets HR teams and managers run structured evaluation cycles (Annual, Half-Yearly, Quarterly, or custom). Each cycle generates a review for every active member. The review flows through four stages: Self-Assessment, Manager Review (hidden from the employee until shared), Share, and Acknowledge. Ratings are based on a configurable scale, competencies, and goal outcomes linked to the employee’s Quests. See Performance Reviews for the full breakdown.
Can employees see their manager’s review before it is shared?
No. The manager review — including ratings, career-level signals, and written notes — is hidden from the employee until the manager explicitly clicks Share. Only after sharing can the employee read the review and acknowledge it.
